Just A Couple Months Late

A couple posts ago (way back in Oct!) I showed you the inspiration behind the kids’ Halloween costumes. Well, I didn’t completely flake out because I did sew the costumes, I just never posted again to show you what they looked like.

As I expected, very few people knew who they were. Except for one man who corrected his partner when he said Kylie was Cinderella. He was the only one who knew Kylie was the Blue Fairy. Quite a few people thought Wyatt was the Mad Hatter, and well, like I thought most people knew Alyssa was Pinocchio. There was one person who asked if Alyssa was Peter Pan and Kylie was Tinkerbell when we were having their pictures taken. Seriously, people? Seriously…

So here they are in all their glory!

As a bonus we won “Best Family Theme” at our Moms of Multiples Halloween party!

Here we are about to go trick or treating. Wyatt did not want to take a picture, he was ready to go!

So… Happy Halloween everyone!!! I am seriously going to try to post this in a more timely fashion next time 🙂

Halloween Inspiration

Halloween is right around the corner, and for the first year ever my girls have picked who they want to be themselves! At first when I asked them they would only say things they have been in the past and I had to explain to them many times that they got to pick something new this year… whatever they wanted!

Let me say, my kids don’t watch TV, and have only watched 2-3 movies ever (and over the course of multiples days.) They do know many characters including Elmo, Big Bird, Disney Princess, Thomas the Train, etc. from reading books.

About two months ago they decided that Alyssa would be Pinocchio and Kylie would be the Blue Fairy. And because I love a theme my Little Man will be Jiminy Cricket. Now, I firmly believe Alyssa is the only one people will recognize as what she picked. She will look like Pinocchio. Most people (unless they read this) will think Kylie is Cinderella, because of the color of her dress and Cinderella’s popularity. And frankly, in talking to most people not many actually even know who the Blue Fairy was. I guess that’s what happens when you pick a character from a movie made over 70 years ago… And Wyatt as Jiminy Cricket. Honestly, if I can get that boy to wear his costume I’ll be happy. He has been less than cooperative in helping me make and fit it so far. Either way, I think he will just look like a very fancy little man.

I do love that being a sewer I am able to makes all my kids’ dreams come true with their costumes. I don’t have to try to find some cookie cutter costume or spend an obscene amount of money on Etsy, I can just create for them. And as I look back at the costumes I made for the girls’ first Halloween… oh how my skills have improved. 🙂 Anyways, I don’t want to show off their costumes yet, and Wyatt’s is still unfinished, but here is a page from the book in case you need help picturing the characters.

The One At The Doctor- 18 Month Stats

Wyatt had his 18 month check up on Monday and it was quite the experience. I had scheduled it for Monday so Russell would be off work to stay home with the girls. Then the day before Alyssa and Kylie decided they needed to go to the doctor with Wyatt because he might be scared and need his big sisters there with him. Although the thought of all of us going was not my ideal, I love the logic and don’t want to down play their helpful and protective feelings for each other. Then we found out our doctor had moved offices. In fact, it was their very first day in the new office. Computers weren’t working, insurances couldn’t be verified, and even though we were one of the first appointments in the morning (9 am) we waited for an hour to be seen. The signs were confusing and a couple of sick kids made their way into the well child waiting room. So we also had a vomiting baby and possible strep throat germs floating around in there with us too. Great. Russell took the girls out to run in the hallway and climb up and down the stairs while I waited with Wyatt for our name to be called. Finally we got called back and he was seen by a very tired looking doctor. Here are his 18 month stats:

Height: 33 1/2 inches, 75th percentile

Weight: 26 lbs 15 oz, 50-75th percentile

Head Circumference: 47 1/4 inches, 25-50th percentile

He did need one shot in the arm and did not even cry, or seem to notice it. I guess maybe he did like having his sisters there! They all got stickers and we got to head out. As we were waiting for the elevator someone, obviously from the staff, came by and apologized for the craziness of the morning. I also noticed she was carrying a more clear “sick child” sign to put up. We have another appointment in 3 months so hopefully more of the kinks will be worked out by then.

The One At The Dentist

The girls have been asking to go back to the dentist since about a week after our last visit. For some reason they thought it was very exciting. The last time we went was actually the first time we ever took the kids and I forgot to bring the camera along. Lame Mommy moment. This time I remembered and got some pretty good pictures.

Alyssa got her x-rays over quick and did super good. Kylie really struggled with having the thing in her mouth, it kept making her gag! We got one side and gave her a break while I sat with Wyatt and held him for his. We only did his front teeth. Then we got Kylie’s other side done and everyone (including Mommy) got a sticker.

I didn’t get any of Wyatt getting his teeth cleaned because he was laying on me to get it done, but here he is after it was over!

In addition to the cleaning, the girls have to have their teeth scraped a bit. They get a dark line near their gums thanks to an iron deposit. It doesn’t harm their teeth, but it looks nicer not having it there.

Kylie- look at how little she is in the chair!

After 3 sets of x-rays, cleanings, and check-ups by the doctor it was time to pick a prize and head home. The girls each picked a “wishing star wand” and Wyatt (shockingly!) chose a ball. They all got new toothbrushes as well. Kylie picked purple, Alyssa pink, and Wyatt green.

I am proud to say we have 54 teeth and no cavities! Everything looks great and I was very proud of their behavior. Total win.

Put Them To Work

Today was house cleaning day around here. We have family and friends starting to arrive tomorrow, and into next weekend also so it was time to tidy up the place a bit. I actually don’t care much about impressing our visitors, it is just an easy way for me to remember the last time it was that I cleaned if I do it right before someone visits. It’s a good thing we have guests every month or so or my house would just be filthy.  A good friend, and fellow twin mom, and I were talking yesterday and she mentioned that someone had said to her: “At least your house is always clean because you stay home with your kids. ” In what world does that person think she lives in. Hasn’t everyone seen this before?

oreos

It is a little counterproductive having kids around while you clean because they can make messes WAY faster than I can clean them up… especially left with less supervision. That’s why I make my kids work too! Isn’t that one of the reasons everyone had like ten kids 150 years ago? They needed help managing the farm, running the house, etc. I say, why should now be any different?

They sweep:

They mop:

Kylie

Alyssa

And they do windows:

August 2013 156

My kids actually love to help and always ask the participate. At 1 1/2 and 3 1/2 they obviously can’t really do these chores all by themselves, but I can’t say no to letting them help. I would be crazy to do anything to turn them off of their desire to help clean!  Hopefully they will take the same pride when I ask them to do chores for years to come!

And check out this special moment I caught after we were all done.

I love them.

Woofter

I miss blogging. I got so busy with the summer, vacation planning and traveling and everything that I really let it slide. I’m not saying I am going to be awesome (or even consistent) but I am going to try to be better.

Saturdays are really our Friday, so I still had the kids to myself today. They talked me into taking all of them, plus Rusty, to the local dog park. It’s called Woofter Park and they have a small dogs area, and a big dogs area. The girls helped hold Rusty’s leash and carry a blanket for us while I carried the diaper bag with snacks and water and Wyatt (not included in the diaper bag).  Everyone had fun. Rusty had a blast running and barking and playing with the other dogs and it really reminded me we have more than just 3 kids. The pets need a little more from us sometimes too. The girls ran and chased Rusty, and all three kids loved petting the other new dogs. It was a wonderful morning.

August 2013 005

The girls also discovered their love of climbing fences, and seriously… they went to town. I was all the way on the other side of the park and they just started climbing, and didn’t stop.

August 2013 002

I had my camera zoomed in all the way for these.

August 2013 004

I had to keep saying “Don’t go all the way over the top.” And if you know my girls, their response won’t surprise you… “For what?”

August 2013 007

On our way to the dog park we stopped at a neighborhood garage sale. They had a bunch of toys and stuff but the thing that made me unload all of my kids was a kitchen nook table. The cool corner bench kind that Russell and I talked about putting in when we first bought our house. It wasn’t in nice enough shape that I asked the price, but the girls did spot a Little Tikes table that they liked. They have still been eating in high chairs and I think at 3 1/2 are probably ready to learn to be big kids and sit still and not make huge messes.

Right?

Am I right?

I hope so because we went home to get some cash an bought the little table. My parents bought a picnic style table a year ago or so for them, but it has kinda been taken over as a craft table (coloring, play-dough, etc) so I justified picking up this one too. Hopefully Russell agrees. I guess we could always use one as an outside table and one for inside.

15 Month Man

Wyatt had his 15 month check up today, and even though he hated laying down to be examined, he still did great. The doctor was impressed with the amount of words he understands and his ability to follow simple instructions. (“Go get your shoes”, “Let’s go back to sissy’s room”, etc) The girls tagged along, and although I usually try to avoid having to bring them with me, today went very well. We were a little early, but were taken back almost immediately and after getting Wyatt weighed and measured were told there was just one person ahead of us.

June 2013 011

The kids entertained themselves watching the cars come and go. Wyatt crawled back and forth on the table. A lot.

June 2013 016

Then we saw the doctor. Here are Wyatt’s 15 month stats:

Height: 32 inches, 75th percentile

Weight: 25lbs 6 oz, 50-75th percentile

Head Circumference: 46 1/2cm, 25-50th percentile

He had to get a few shots, which are never fun, but I believe are worth it. The whole visit took only about 20 minutes, which is not usually the case for us. The girls had perfect behavior and were rewarded with stickers and “lickers” (a sucker) for being such big helpers.

Adventures In Potty Training- Part 3

After months and months of little to no interest in potty training the girls are finally ready, and there is no slowing them down. We are leaving soon for a trip for their birthday and so I had intended on simply getting them more comfortable on the potty before then, and then focusing on training after our return. But it doesn’t seem like they really want to wait now! For the past month or so they have been able to go pee (in their diapers) before bed, so they would stay dry a good portion of the night. Last week I brought in their portable froggy potties into their room and had them try to pee in those before bed. The first night they sat, but were unwilling to pee. I decided to put their diapers back on but return them to the potty to go there. Alyssa did, but Kylie did not. The next night Alyssa actually did pee sans diaper, and Kylie peed with her diaper. The night after that they were both peeing on the potty before bed. That was the extent that I was planning on doing before our trip… just to get them a little more comfortable. BUT, the girls have more in mind and started asking to go before nap. And then the next day it was a couple times a day. Now they are asking to go use the potty every time! We have an insert for the regular toilet that they use too, so we will be bringing it on our trip with us. (The froggy potties are too big to bring both with us) But we will also be bringing plenty of diapers for the whole trip. The way I see it, I don’t want to make them worried about it on their birthday vacation so there will be absolutely no pressure. But if they ask and want to use the potty I don’t want to have to tell them no either! Every time they pee they get to wash hands with special potty soap in a hippopotamus dispenser and get to put a sticker on a potty chart.

I made these charts way back in April of last year. They still love Elmo thankfully! Last time we tried introducing them to the potty Alyssa had slightly more luck (and luck was all it was) and had more stickers on her chart. Kylie was trying, but it made her sad. I hated that and didn’t know how to reward one without the other one feeling left out. So we decided to just give stickers and let them put them anywhere on either chart and it has worked so much better. For them picking a sticker is enough of a reward and working up to something else is not needed. Today Kylie asked me to print off another chart since these ones were all full. What a good problem to have!

Happy Halloween!

The girls sorta remember last year. They knew they’d get to wear their costumes and would get candy from our neighbors. But for my Little Man, this was his first ever Halloween. He won’t be getting any candy, doesn’t know or care about a costume, and isn’t entirely sure what to do with his pumpkin, but gosh he is cute!

I hope everyone had a happy safe and happy night tonight. Here is our family represented in pumpkins. (The girls thought my Rusty one was a fox, but oh well!)

Kylie, Anina, Wyatt, Russell, Alyssa

The trio about to set out.

Happy Halloween! Now it’s time the “inspect” the kids candy. 🙂
